  • Gain a solid understanding of the development of codes & standards, and details on how ASME and other non-Canadian standards are used within the Canadian system.
  • Understand how CSA B51 Code guidelines become minimum legal requirements in Canada with specific attention to code adoption and the differences between various jurisdictions.
  • Learn about the new code clauses, proper application of tables & annexes, and the application of reference documents.
  • Discover the difference between the ASME boiler Code sections and the B31 piping Standards through an explanation of content and proper application of tables and annexes using the ASME B31.3 as the primary example.
  • Understanding Canadian Registration Numbers is critical to the successful implementation of both the CSA B51 and ASME codes of construction in Canada. A focused review of the development of requirements contained in the ASME B31.3 piping standard and the Canadian requirements in the CSA B51 including the requirements for registration will be discussed.
  • Understand the framework required to establish an ASME weld procedure with a review of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code section IX including details of the requirement to register the procedures and an explanation of how to determine the correct Authority for registration.
  • Learn the importance of the construction requirements as part of an integral system including design, material selection, joining and construction. Testing requirements and non-destructive examination will also be addressed.
  • Explore the use of quality systems in the design and construction of process piping systems.

Course Overview

This updated two-day course provides an in-depth review of the requirements for process piping systems, including overviews and basic applications of both the CSA B51-14 Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Pressure Piping Code and the ASME-B31.3-2012 Process Piping Code. It will include content on two new B51 clauses: Clause 12, Pressure relief devices and Clause 13, In-service inspection. It covers the content of both codes during the phases from design through to operational control and in-service management. The emphasis will be on learning the inter-relationship between the two codes.

Participants will take away the knowledge that pressure systems must always be operated, maintained and periodically inspected & tested in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and the applicable legislative requirements.
