Health Care employees with medical device reprocessing responsibilities including:
Medical Device Reprocessing Technicians are involved in the cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of reusable medical devices within health care facilities, including mid-to-large sized acute care hospitals as well as small practitioner community offices, dental offices and outpatient clinics. The key to implementing an effective infection prevention and control regime is to ensure that all personnel are trained, knowledgeable and skilled in sterilization protocols, processes and procedures. Effectively managing infection prevention and control within health care facilities helps to mitigate risks and protect both patients and employees.
The CSA Z314 series of standards provides guidance for a wide array of sterilization processes and procedures and forms the underlying foundation of the course curriculum. Developed in collaboration with the Cegep de Saint Laurent as a supplementary learning tool for current employees in Medical Device Reprocessing Departments, students will gain an understanding of critical activities associated with effective medical device reprocessing as well as important legal, occupational health & safety, and risk management concepts, all from the convenience of their home or office.
CSA Group works in collaboration with key stakeholders in the Health Care sector and has developed a number of important learning solutions for health care facilities and providers.
Accreditation of the Medical Device Reprocessing profession is gaining momentum and regional Health Ministries and Authorities are implementing policies and regulations that will ensure certification becomes a mandatory element of the job profile. CSA Group's Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician CMDRT is the first national personnel certification program based on Canadian standards and best practices for technicians reprocessing reusable medical devices and is being referenced in Provincial legislation across the country. The Medical Device Reprocessing Online curriculum can serve as a useful study aid for those students preparing to take the CMDRT certification exam.
