Qualifies individuals to install factory assembled windows, exterior doors and unit skylights in residential buildings three stories or less

Scope

The certification addresses the need to ensure the knowledge, skills and abilities of individuals who install factory assembled windows, exterior doors and unit skylights in residential buildings three stories or less.  To become certified, individuals will have demonstrated proficiency in understanding and applying manufacturer installation instructions, general building principles, the CSA A440.4 window installation standard and other industry standards and/or best practices.

 

Minimum Qualifications

The Fenestration Installation Technician certification tests each candidate’s knowledge to ensure the candidate possesses the knowledge and skills of a minimally qualified candidate. CSA’s expert committee defines the minimally qualified candidate as follows:
The minimally qualified candidate has the knowledge and is able to:

• Understand the latest construction and building technologies,
• Read, understand and apply standards, codes and manufacturer’s instructions, and
• Utilize the appropriate materials, methods and select, use and maintain tools required for the proper installation of factory assembled exterior doors, windows and unit skylights in residential settings 3 stories or less.
• Within the following parameters:
• Combustible residential building of three stories or less
• Factory Assembled Windows, Doors & Unit Skylights
• New construction
• Replacements

What can this person do without assistance?

• Basic mathematics, geometry
• Understand construction documentation including drawings and written specifications
• Understand and apply the latest construction and building technologies
• Read, understand and apply the A440.4 Window installation standard as well as industry best practices and building science concepts
• Understand and apply the regional and local climatic requirements – including A440.4 annex A installation guidelines (refer to current p. 50)

Certification Prerequisite:

• Experience: 2000 hours (1 year) work experience within the past 5 years

OR

• Training:  Manufacturer or industry training program, AND Experience: 500 hours work experience with the past 5 years

Cost

To apply for this certification, submit an application (located in the FIT-1  Guidebook) with the following fees:

• Application fee: $95.00
• Exam fee: $250.00

Once you pass the exam, you are a Certified Fenestration Installation Technician – Level 1.  The certification is valid for 5 years.  There is an annual fee of $50 to maintain your certification.  To re-certify after 5 years, candidates will be required to re-exam.  For additional fees such as rescheduling exams and replacement certification cards, please see the FIT-1 Guidebook.
