Passing the GHG Verifier examination will indicate that the candidate possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to work in the role of a verifier. The CSA Group website will contain a registry of certified Greenhouse Gas Verifiers.

Prerequisites

To apply for taking the GHG Verifier exam, candidates must demonstrate previous education/experience in two areas:

A. Technical education/experience

  • Masters + in science related field and one year relevant experience OR
  • Bachelors in science related field and 2 years relevant experience OR
  • Bachelors + in non-science field and 3 years relevant experience OR
  • Ten years or more verified experience

AND

B. Auditing experience (of any kind: financial, environmental, etc.)

  • Three documented GHG projects as a team member, including:
  • Description of each project (role, level of effort)
  • References
  • Contact information (e.g., clients, supervisors)
  • Quantitative and qualitative examples

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

To become a Certified Greenhouse Gas Verifier an applicant must:

1. Submit a signed application form documenting the required education and/or experience
2. Meet all prerequisites of the certification (as applicable)
3. Sign and adhere to the professional code of ethics
4. Submit all required fees
5. Pass a written exam

Each applicant is granted a six month eligibility period in which to pass the examination. During the examination eligibility period, an applicant may take the examination up to three times.

Once you pass the exam, you are certified as a GHG Verifier. The certification is valid for 3 years. To maintain certification after 3 years, candidates will be required to re-exam if they do not have 5 post- certification GHG Verification assignments where the GHG Verifier was assigned as a team member

Overview

The qualified candidate for the GHG Verifier certification has in-depth knowledge of GHG fundamentals, climate change science principles, and generally accepted protocols, standards and methodologies (e.g., WRI, ISO, IPCC). The qualified candidate is able to calculate GHG emissions for common source types.

They will be able to understand risk assessment concepts and evidence collection techniques and can demonstrate accounting and auditing skills. They will also possess a basic understanding of data quality and information management systems.

Scope

This program will provide opportunities for GHG professionals to become certified and conduct verifications as part of a verification team. This certification is designed to complement accreditation programs for verification bodies.

Minimum Candidate Qualifications

The GHG Verifier certification tests each candidate's knowledge to ensure the candidate possesses the knowledge and skills of a minimally qualified candidate. CSA's expert committee defines the minimally qualified candidate as follows: The minimally qualified candidate has in-depth knowledge of GHG fundamentals, climate change science principles, and generally accepted protocols, standards and methodologies (e.g., WRI, ISO, IPCC.)

The minimally qualified candidate is able to calculate GHG emissions for common source types, understands risk assessment concepts and evidence collection techniques and can demonstrate accounting and auditing skills.
