Piping Industry Tradespersons that are Journeypersons or Registered Apprentices in the following occupations:

Prerequisites

Experience
Proof of Qualification (one of the following):

  • Provincial Certificate of Qualification in one of the Pipe Trades; OR
  • Interprovincial Red Seal Certification in one of the Pipe Trades; OR
  • Metal Trades Worker or Registered Apprentice: equivalent evidence of status through employer documented hours with a minimum of 2000 hours in a 3 year period of rigging work in the piping industry in a shop or production facility;

Education/Training
Successful completion of 24 Hours Classroom Training in rigging principles (NAUSC rigging course or equivalent)

Practical Exam
Successful completion of 16 hours Practical Training (NAUSC rigging course or equivalent)

CSA Written Examination
Successful completion of Performance Testing consisting of 4 required lifts as set out in NAUSC rigging program (NAUSC testing or equivalent)

Overview

A partnership has been formed with the United Association Canada (UA), the National Association of Union Schools and Colleges (NAUSC), and CSA Group. This initiative will provide a Canadian piping trades training and certification national standard for rigging that will ensure safe and productive worksites for anyone involved in installation and maintenance of piping systems in all areas of the piping industry in Canada.

The acronym P.I.P.E.S. stands for "Pipe, Inclusive of Piping systems and associated Equipment and Supports". This P.I.P.E.S. Rigging Personnel Certification will be designed specifically by and for Journeyperson and Apprentice piping industry workers.

Scope

The UA/NAUSC P.I.P.E.S. Rigging Program will prepare Journeyperson and Apprentice pipe trades workers to complete rigging operations with the skills and abilities to complete the work safely and securely in all forms of construction and maintenance operations in the piping industry. The program is designed to give participants a better understanding of the complexities of working safely as rigging specialists as defined by the piping industry. Occupational Health and Safety requirements, along with the latest proven rigging techniques found in the field will prepare participants to work as a rigger.

Minimum Candidate Qualifications

The P.I.P.E.S Rigging Personnel Certification tests each candidate's knowledge to ensure the candidate possesses the knowledge and skills of a minimally qualified candidate. CSA Group's expert committee defines the minimally qualified candidate as follows:

The minimally qualified candidate can safely perform the following activities without assistance, including (but not limited to):

  • Rigging Safety and Regulations
  • Rigging Tools and Equipment
  • Principles of lifting and hoisting
  • Lifting and hoisting devices
  • Proper Rigging techniques and good practices
  • Cranes and crane signals
  • Communication and teamwork
  • Productivity and project end goals
